David Byrne is a hero
This link is all over this week, but worth reading if you're an independent musician or cartoonist: David Byrne's Survival Strategies for Emerging Artists — and Megastars

My friends and I are mostly the #6 combo meal deal: self-distributors. I've been trying to bang this into older cartoonists' heads for years now. He sums it all up far better than I ever could.

Freedom versus pragmatism? Pragmatism IS freedom.

The audio interview clips in that article and the attached one with Byrne interviewing Thom Yorke almost made me sprout a tail for the sole purpose of wagging it, because I was just that excited to listen. I am a pretty huge nerd like that.

It is an exciting time to be an artist. I gotta get on that.

What's audio this year will be video in the next 5 years. I'm a videographer and video editor, and I'm very excited about this, though not all of my video editing friends feel the same way.

I, too, am a video editor. Why do you think this model isn't valid for video now? Bandwidth?

If you're talking about distribution, yes.

If you're talking about production, I feel like computing power is the only thing left in the barriers between blockbuster-size effects and home production.

Hey, if you're willing to deal with long render times you can do pretty much anything you want, effects-wise, with Maya and Combustion (or After Effects, if you prefer) on your Octocore MacPro. :)

But okay, yeah, maybe the model isn't ready for the Blockbuster Hollywood Feature, but there's a vast world of cinema out there that doesn't require 1,200 effects shots over 90 minutes.

The best comment I've ever seen on Digg was on the story about discovering a mass of water-saturated rocks deep under China (the "underground ocean"). Someone replied with "Wow! David Byrne was right!"

Obscure, vague, yet instantly obvious. Fucking genius.

Self-Distribution definitely seems to be my calling. Now if only I could get the ball rolling faster, and figure things out for myself, I'd be set! :)

there's no reason not to distribute and promote and do everything yourself.

yes, it's more work. yes, sometimes you'll be ignorned. yes, sometimes the shows will suck and the cds won't sell and you'll feel like killing yourself.

but, you won't owe a label $500,000 and you (most likely) won't go broke doing it.

musicians : DIY is coming back in a big way. believe that.

Good article. If the creative content distribution terrain changes enough McCloud may write a sequel to reinventing comics.

Coincidentally (Ironically?), Byrne's greatest album is finally on CD after 20 years in Limbo. I love, love, love this music.
