unicode is the new unicron
tearing my hair out here trying to type a character in wingdings on the mac. can anybody help a fellow out?

a key combo or link to a vector-outlined version of the character would equally earn you my gratitude!

On my mac, I usually go into System Preferences→International and turn on "Show input menu in menu bar"

Then I can click on "Show Character Palette" in the menuling, dig around in there, then double click or cut & paste.

In many cases ⌘⌥T brings up the palette directly.

In the input menu, there is also a "Show Keyboard Viewer," but I don't see a direct key combo for ✯.

Unfortunately, looking through Apple's own docs, it doesn't appear that they offer a keyboard shortcut for inserting a Unicode character if you already know its code. They appear to want you to use the giant, screen-gobbling character palette for such needs. Would it be that hard to have an option+shift (or similar) command to type in the hex string? :/

In either case, I found the pinwheel star in the Dingbats section of the character palette. Open the character palette, select Code Table instead of Glyph, and you can't miss it.

OS X totally lets you input arbitrary Unicode characters using their hex code! But you have to activate it first, because it's actually a separate keyboard layout:

Input menu options

It's the one called "Unicode Hex Input," with the little purple and yellow "U+" flag. Anyway, you activate that, make sure it's the active input mode, then hold down the Option key and type in a Unicode hex ID.

I can only find that character in Wingdings 2. Key combo is 0243. Not sure if that helps.
