Cynicism is the new Realism
I thought of this t-shirt a few months ago, thinking I'd have to make a Colbert-style fake right wing website to sell them. Recent events have proven me wrong. Oh well.

I guess the moral of the story is "don't get too excited about politicians, as they are still politicians." As long as he's not already been bought out by the military-industrial complex, maybe we can expect better management? Better enunciated speeches? Hell, I'd settle for one less simultaneously waged war. My standards are not high.

dare to hope. prepare to be disappointed. obama shirt

Yours,

A proud donor to the the Mike Gravel campaign.

PS: Yes, I've already put in for bumper stickers. They're gonna take a few weeks.

I'm writing in Dennis "Not A Hot Dog" Kucinich.

Primarily because I live in Illinois, though.

God I wanted him to be President so hard.

I may have to use this t-shirt/bumper sticker/both for right wing evil.

My apologies, or something. If it's any consolation, I don't like either of 'em, either.

You know I thought hard about the stuff he's said recently and I will admit that I was scared. HELLA scared. The abortion thing I don't have a problem with, but the Faith Based Initiative is scary.

But his argument for that makes sense - he just wants the groups that know the community to work with the community - the government doesn't know what certain groups need. The problem is that a lot of faith based initiative money goes towards, y'know, fake abortion clinics and the like.

He is still a politician, but he is bringing out a lot of this stuff now so he doesn't come off as a flaming liberal. He's acting before the swiftboat veterans swiftboat him. Do I agree with everything he's said? No. I doubt we'd agree with any politician 100%, even President Bartlett.

I completely hear ya. The only real problem is how do we get this across to idealists in order to hear less whining?

That's the thing, I'm not sure you can. At least I have no idea how.

You really can only hope and prepare yourself for the worst. Then if he doesn't disappoint, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Your shirt speaks truths.

I don't understand the surprise. Of course Obama immediately shifted gears and turned into a politicuan like all the other politicians we've had. That's what he is. That's his job. That's what they do. It's like the worst singles bar in the world, only it's populated by the people who actually run the country, so I guess that makes it even worse than the worst singles bar in the world. He didn't get to where he already is by NOT being a politician. It's his job to say whatever will trick people into believing in him or voting for him, and then go ahead and do what he's got to do to look out for himself anyway. They all do that, or they wouldn't get elected as far as they do. Just because the guy buys you a few drinks doesn't mean you've got to go home with him, man.

Numerous comments:
1) Mike Gravel? Really? He's crazy, his policies are semi-retarded, and his campaign was never serious. Oh and he loved jumping parties at the end. Is he a Democrat? A Green? A Libertarian? Who knows!!!

2) yeah, I'm disappointed by the FISA thing. It sucks. it was the wrong decision probably. But on 99% of the issues he's 999999999% better than any of the jackasses on the other side of the aisle (and a good deal better than most on his side of the aisle as well). Also, remember to blame Nancy Pelosi for coming out in favor of it earlier than expected (or at all) putting Obama in a bad situation because he also has to deal with all the pissed off Hillary dead enders right around the same time. Sometimes politicians, even great ones, have to make decisions we don't like because of what goes into campaigning. it sucks. Deal with it.

3) the faith based initiatives thing: pleeeeeaase, do some research before bitching about it. Actually read what he said. May I recommend what The Friendly Atheist had to say about it: http://friendlyatheist.com/2008/07/01/barack-obama-on-faith-based-initiatives/ The overreacting to that based on what you saw in a headline or from a friend, well, that's just dumb. Fear mongering for fear mongering's sake without respect to reality is bad no matter what you are making people afraid of (war, terror or policy statements). That goes for Bob Herbert, too.

Yeah. Politics sucks. Politicians do things we don't like. Boo fucking hoo. We have a system that *guarantees* we'll never get that perfect champion we want. We have a system that guarantees we have to hold onto a politican that is 90% great and quit bitching about that 10% we don't like and pretending that 10% is the end of the freaking world.

Get a grip, people.

It is not difficult to put fruit and half-mixed pastry into an oven; and even then it's just an excuse to eat ice cream.

I think his position on the Telecom immunity has a lot to do with public image, instead of his views. If he voted "no", the reaction probably would have been something along the lines of "oh, he's a Muslim/terrorist, so of course he doesn't want warrentless wiretaps!".
