the train to san diego
Hoo ha! I am an insane person who decided to take the train to the San Diego Comicon this year. (booth 1335 / 1337 by small press, as usual) Amtrak is pretty weird and very charming.

I'm about 1/3 the way across the country right now, sitting in a lounge in Chicago. I set up a Tumblr account to easily document the trip without spamming every other service I'm on.

it's actually way cheaper than a road trip! and you can work in buying-ahead discounts, AAA, all kindsa stuff.

my justification is that it's a quiet few days to think and write before the insanity of comicon.

Am I the only one who spotted that the very nice man that is R Stevens is going to be at booth 1337? 1337 geddit? Leet? He is going to be at the "Elite" booth?

I just checked the tumblr site. The boy scouts on that train are going to the Philmont Scout Ranch, the Mecca of scouting. Scouts from all over the world go there every summer to backpack. I was a ranger there last summer (I'm supposed to be there right now but things got screwed up and I'm stuck in the city and miserable). It was my job to guide the crews of scouts into the wilderness and teach them how to survive - there are bears, mountain lions, rattle snakes, black widows, brown recluses, and mountains you can fall off - without destroying the forest. That's important to note: they're not going to the desert, Philmont is 215 square miles of beautiful rocky mountain forest. My time spent there as a young boy from the city and, later on, living in a one-man tent for 3 months while working there, was some of the best of my entire life.

As for the pizza, it sucks.
